In December 2003, students at Star
Charter School knew that the high school math teacher, Mr. B, was
obsessed about Survivor and as a Kristmas gift, a few of them gave
him a Survivor board game. He enjoyed the gift and 7 students sat
around and played a mini-version of the game that took around 3 hours
to complete.
After that experience, news spread throughout campus. Students
talked about the enjoyment they had from the game and requested
that Mr. B actually plan and host
another version of the game. With the school’s permission, Mr. B hosted
a 4-hour long game that had 14 contestants. The game became such a hit that
the school, Star Charter School, actually allowed Mr. B to host many other
games
throughout the school year.
In fact, it became so popular that some students asked Mr.B to create a Survivor-themed
summer camp, where instead of the game lasting 4 hours, it would last 5 days.
Knowing how much would need to go into the game, Mr. B challenged those who wanted
the camp to raise $1600 in 28 days. After 27 days, the students had raised over
$1800.
In the summer of 2005, Mr. B hosted a 5-day long Survivor-themed camp and
the experience was beyond anyone’s expectations. Mr. B stated “it was
the best experience of my life.” Other students have said “before
this camp, I wasn’t that confident, but now, after having played this game,
I know that I can do anything that I set my mind to.” The camp was
such a beautiful and amazing experience that 2 weeks after the camp, students
began
preparing for summer 2006.
Star Charter was host to the second annual Survivor-themed summer camp in the
summer of 2006. 16 students competed against each other for 7 days, and once
again, the camp proved to be not only inspirational but a memory that will last
a lifetime.
